Binance Faces Backlash Amid Allegations of Seizing Palestinian Crypto Funds Under Israeli Request

Binance, cryptocurrency exchange accused of confiscating cryptocurrency assets from Palestinians at Israel's request.

Binance, a major worldwide cryptocurrency exchange, is under severe investigation after it was accused of confiscating cryptocurrency assets from Palestinians at Israel's request. The charges, made public by industry insider Ray Youssef, CEO of Noones P2P network and co-founder of Paxful, aroused intense controversy in the cryptocurrency world. Binance has recently rejected these allegations, claiming that only a limited number of accounts tied to illegal activity were affected.

The dispute started after Youssef posted on X (previously Twitter) that Binance had purportedly taken all Palestinian cryptocurrency funds in response to an Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) request. According to the accusations, this action was taken in accordance with Israel's anti-terrorism legislation, which allow for the temporary seizure of property from proclaimed terrorist organizations, including cryptocurrencies. Binance allegedly produced a letter from Israel's National Bureau for Counter-Terrorism Financing, which emphasizes this legal framework.

A Binance spokesperson stated that only a small number of user accounts, notably those associated with criminal money, were blocked. The statement emphasized that Binance follows globally approved penalties and that the limits were minor, impacting a small number of users. The exchange also expressed optimism for long-term peace in the region.

The event has sparked debate over bitcoin asset ownership and security, with many users emphasizing the significance of the slogan "Not your keys, not your coins." The claims have also sparked fears about the possibility of similar steps being taken against users in other locations, including Lebanon and Syria.

Despite all the fuss, figures from SimilarWeb show that Palestine is a modest market for Binance, accounting for only 0.05% of total traffic over the last year. However, traffic from Palestine to Binance has increased by more than 80% since August 2023, indicating significant interest or activity in the region.

As the situation develops, the crypto community will closely monitor how Binance and other platforms handle the complicated terrain of international sanctions and legislation. While Binance continues to dispute the widespread seizure of Palestinian assets, the debate highlights the continued difficulty of combining regulatory compliance with the decentralized nature of cryptocurrencies.
